As part of ARTLICKS WEEKEND, CAMPerVAN presents:
LOVE ISLAND : The Queer Periphery
This summer, the Love Island frenzy reached unprecedented heights with 3.4 million viewers tuning in. A strictly straight ‘reality’ show that combines love with a cash prize of £50,000 for the winning couple, it grossly under represents ethnic diversity, age variation and sexual orientation.
But no more! ‘CAMPerVAN Love Island: The Queer Periphery’ is an attempt to subvert this ideologue by exploring, playing with and responding to questions around manufactured identity, social media and the relationship between love and capitalism.
Gone are the young toned and tanned, replaced by the rainbow of representation that is the CAMPerVAN’s extended LGBTQ+ community. Through performance, spoken-word, discussion and workshops we will consider how love affairs and other forms of union can help to create new ways of existing in the world.
Where does the peripheral queer community fit into the culture of Love Island in 2018? Through this event we will find out.
